India Pushes BRICS to Link CBDCs and Bypass Dollar
India is pushing for a proposal to link central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) of BRICS nations, which will be discussed at the upcoming leaders' summit in New Delhi on September 12-13. The Reserve Bank of India first floated this idea in January 2026.
The concept is simple: allowing the e-rupee to communicate directly with China's digital yuan, Russia's digital ruble, and Brazil's Drex would enable trade settlements and tourism payments between countries without using the US dollar as an intermediary.
India has carefully framed this initiative as a plumbing upgrade, not a geopolitical statement. New Delhi prefers limited bilateral linkages to avoid comparisons with SWIFT and scrutiny from Washington.
The 2025 BRICS summit declaration had already endorsed greater interoperability among member payment systems, making India's proposal an actionable agenda item for the September summit.
