India Stays Away from Bitcoin Reserves Despite Widespread Crypto Adoption

India's government currently holds zero disclosed Bitcoin holdings, despite being one of the world's largest countries in terms of crypto usage. According to BitcoinTreasuries, the country has not adopted a Bitcoin treasury like many other large economies.

The main reason for India's cautious approach is that the government hasn't yet identified a clear need for Bitcoin as a sovereign reserve asset, and it prioritizes maintaining adequate liquidity, safety, and returns in its foreign exchange reserves. The RBI focuses mainly on holding foreign assets and gold, which makes adding a Bitcoin reserve program challenging.

Another reason for India's hesitation is the potential risks to taxpayers. If the government were to adopt a Bitcoin reserve, it could offer another way to diversify government assets, but it also means that taxpayers would bear the consequences of a BTC price fall.
