India Taps Solar Surplus for Bitcoin Mining, But Storage Remains Key Challenge
India's solar power surplus has created a new problem for the country: what to do with all the excess energy. According to Indian entrepreneur Prafull Billore, who shared his concerns on X, India's infrastructure can't absorb or store the extra energy fast enough, resulting in 11.5% of capacity going unused. This is particularly true during peak sunlight hours when solar plants produce more electricity than the grid can take.
One potential solution to this problem is Bitcoin mining. Mining operations require a lot of electricity and can adjust their power use based on availability. This means that miners could work more during peak solar hours, utilizing excess energy that would otherwise go unused. Billore noted that India generated around 8 TWh of solar power that couldn't be used.
Other countries have already successfully implemented Bitcoin mining using renewable energy. In Brazil, mining companies have taken advantage of cheap electricity from solar and wind power to run their operations more efficiently. Bhutan has also partnered with mining companies to use its abundant hydropower for large-scale Bitcoin mining.
