India Targets Decentralized Messaging App Bitchat
India has ordered GitHub to remove several repositories related to Bitchat, a decentralized messaging app created by Jack Dorsey. The authorities claim that the application complicates user identification and surveillance.
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre requested the removal of three repositories associated with the project, citing section 79(3)(b) of the Indian Information Technology Act.
Bitchat allows users to communicate offline without relying on a central server or phone numbers. It can also relay Bitcoin transactions, making it a censorship-resistant tool.
