India’s 7.8% GDP Growth Masks Household Wealth Gap Driving BTC Demand
India's GDP growth hit 7.8% in the April to June quarter of FY27, but this rapid expansion has yet to translate into household wealth or stronger wages for most Indians.
The country's per capita income is a mere $2,810, ranking it around 150th globally, according to IMF data from April 2026. This leaves many Indians seeking alternative investment opportunities, with over 100 million users estimated in the Indian crypto market.
Younger investors, particularly those under 35, are driving fresh adoption and fueling demand for Bitcoin (BTC). With a third of new investors coming from students aged 18-25, many see BTC as an aspiration asset offering quicker gains than traditional wealth-building methods like property or mutual fund SIPs.
The appeal of Bitcoin extends beyond price speculation for some Indian investors, who seek exposure to global assets and dollar stability in the face of long-term rupee depreciation. Rising incomes could expand the Indian crypto market further, making BTC an increasingly important global asset.
