India's Banks Embrace Blockchain, Keep Cryptocurrencies at Arm's Length
Indian banks are increasingly adopting blockchain technology to streamline their operations and improve efficiency. This shift comes as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) continues to support the development of distributed ledger systems for regulated financial services, while maintaining a cautious approach towards cryptocurrencies.
The RBI's Digital Rupee pilot has been one of the country's largest real-world tests of blockchain technology in payments. The project has expanded steadily since its launch in 2022, with around 19 banks participating in the retail pilot and an estimated six to seven million users.
Meanwhile, the Indian Banks' Digital Infrastructure Company (IBDIC) consortium has made significant progress in developing shared digital networks for financial services. Its flagship trade finance project has reduced processing times by up to 75%, cutting transactions from eight or nine days to just two or three days.
