India's Crypto Adoption Puzzle: Low Wages and High Participation
India's high participation in global crypto adoption is puzzling when considering its long working hours and relatively low wages. According to Chainalysis' Global Crypto Adoption Index, India ranked first overall in 2025. However, a closer look at the data reveals that Indians average 41.7 work hours weekly but earn only ₹5,675. This limited disposable income raises questions about whether high participation is driven by small-scale investments or restricted capital allocation.
Crypto platforms like CoinDCX allow recurring investments starting at ₹100, making it possible for workers with low incomes to participate in the market. However, taxes and volatility can reduce capital available for subsequent trades. The 30% tax on virtual digital asset gains, along with applicable surcharges and cess, further constrains investor behavior.
The relationship between crypto adoption and wealth creation is complex. While high participation does not necessarily translate to large investments, it may indicate a willingness to take on risk despite limited financial means.
