India's Crypto Investors Warned: Keep Accurate Records or Face Tax Notices
As the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) in India approaches, crypto investors are being reminded of the importance of maintaining accurate transaction records. While many may think that simply filing taxes is enough to comply with Indian laws, experts warn that proper documentation can help avoid future tax notices.
Crypto tax experts emphasize that investors must keep a complete record of every digital asset transaction. This includes details such as purchase and sale dates, token names, quantities, acquisition costs, rupee values, and transaction fees.
Vikram Subburaj, CEO of Giottus.com, states, 'Tax disputes often arise not because an investor fails to report a transaction, but because the figures in the return cannot be reconstructed several years later.' He notes that record-keeping is especially important due to the evolution of trading in India.
Subburaj advises investors to maintain regular backups of their records and keep offline copies of transaction details. This ensures that records remain accessible even if a crypto exchange closes or imposes restrictions on account access.
