India's Crypto Market Maturity: Beyond Notional Turnover
India's crypto market has been growing rapidly, but a closer look at the data reveals that the often-touted 'Futures problem' is not as straightforward as it seems. The Economic Times reports that while Futures turnover may be high, it does not necessarily translate to market maturity.
The issue lies in the fact that Futures turnover is notional and can be manipulated by repeated opening and closing of positions. At 10x leverage, Rs 1 lakh of margin can create Rs 10 lakh of exposure, allowing for multiple multiples of reported turnover.
However, India's regulated equity derivatives market offers a cautionary tale. SEBI found that 93% of individual F&O traders lost money between FY22 and FY24, with aggregate losses exceeding Rs 1.8 lakh crore. The lesson is not that derivatives are inherently unsuitable for retail investors, but rather that enormous turnover and poor investor outcomes can coexist.
Therefore, the health of the spot market must remain part of the assessment. Deep spot order books permit sizeable transactions without severe price distortion and anchor dependable price discovery. Useful disclosures would include bid-ask spreads and slippage for standard order sizes, rather than spot turnover alone.
