India's Gold Rally Puts CZ's Bitcoin-Gold Prediction to the Test
Binance co-founder Changpeng 'CZ' Zhao believes that Bitcoin has the potential to surpass gold in value, but recent market movements in India have highlighted the significant gap between the two assets.
In August, India's MCX gold prices rose by 13.51%, reaching ₹19,212 per 10 grams. This surge in price did not deter investors from buying into gold, with Indian gold ETFs attracting a total of ₹27.39 billion (₹11.79 billion in two weeks and ₹15.6 billion in July) since the start of August.
CZ's prediction that Bitcoin could overtake gold during the next bull cycle is contingent on its broader adoption across various sectors, including payments, pension portfolios, retirement savings, and government reserves. However, the current market dynamics suggest a significant gap between the two assets, with gold's value standing at around $32.396 trillion compared to Bitcoin's $1.589 trillion.
The Indian market has been particularly resilient in its love for gold, with Chainalysis ranking India first in its 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index across all four categories (retail activity, centralized services, decentralized finance, and institutional participation). Despite this, investors still face significant tax friction, with income from virtual digital assets taxed at 30% and qualifying transfers subject to 1% TDS.
