India's INR Stablecoin Push Sparks Dollarization Fears
India's government is exploring the launch of an INR stablecoin, which could make it easier for Indian users to access dollar-backed stablecoins such as USDT and USDC.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that the introduction of a local stablecoin could accelerate dollarization, especially in countries with high inflation or currency volatility.
According to the IMF, a local currency-backed crypto can make it easier for users to move between the rupee and other digital assets. If the INR stablecoin is built on the same blockchain as USD-backed tokens, it could allow users to swap their local crypto directly for USDT and USDC.
However, this does not mean that an INR stablecoin would automatically increase access to these foreign tokens. It would depend on other factors like liquidity, regulation, exchange availability, etc.
