India's Rupee Stablecoin Push Raises Dollarization Concerns
India is considering introducing an INR stablecoin, but its launch has yet to be confirmed. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) warns that this could accelerate dollarization in the country.
The rupee-backed cryptocurrency aims to bring the local currency further into the digital ecosystem and facilitate faster cross-border payments without relying on foreign stablecoins. However, experts raise concerns that an INR stablecoin could make it easier for Indian users to access dollar-backed tokens like USDT and USDC.
According to the IMF, a local currency-backed cryptocurrency can create an easier pathway to foreign stablecoins if they are built on the same blockchain. This would allow users to potentially swap their local crypto directly for USDT and USDC, reducing the number of steps involved in converting rupees into these tokens.
