India's Rupee Stablecoin Push Sparks Dollarization Fears
India is considering launching a rupee-backed stablecoin to bring its local currency further into the digital ecosystem. This move aims to facilitate faster and easier cross-border payments without relying on foreign stablecoins. However, some experts warn that an INR stablecoin could make it easier for Indian users to access dollar-backed stablecoins like USDT and USDC, potentially leading to dollarization.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has highlighted the risk of dollarization, particularly in countries with high inflation, currency volatility, or weaker economic stability. According to the IMF, a local currency-backed crypto could make it easier for users to move between the rupee and other digital assets, including dollar-denominated stablecoins.
India's Reserve Bank is cautious about stablecoins, with Deputy Governor T. Rabi Sankar warning that they do not hold any benefits over traditional currencies. He prioritizes a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) as a safer digital payment option. The RBI has yet to approve the launch of an INR stablecoin.
