India's Startup Ecosystem Sees Shift Towards Regulation and Responsible Growth
India's startup ecosystem is witnessing significant developments across various sectors, including e-commerce, fintech, crypto, healthcare, and gaming. The government has introduced stricter regulations for e-commerce platforms to ensure transparency and accountability.
The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 have been amended, requiring platforms to clearly disclose sponsored listings, display both the reduced price and prior price when announcing discounts, and restrict search result manipulation that misleads consumers. Platforms will also be restricted from using 'dark patterns' to influence consumer behavior.
The RBI Governor has urged fintech companies to prioritize data protection and cybersecurity as AI becomes increasingly embedded in financial services. He highlighted the risks of bias, exclusion, cyber threats, data-privacy concerns, and human judgment erosion.
The cryptocurrency sector is facing heightened regulatory scrutiny, with 15 virtual digital asset service providers receiving compliance notices for alleged anti-money laundering framework violations. The government is extending its oversight to offshore platforms as well as domestic operators.
