Industry- Wide Warning Sends Shockwaves Through Markets as AI Stocks Plummet
An AI industry-wide warning has sent shockwaves through markets. The warning comes from within the industry itself, specifically from Anthropic's chief executive who published a 3,800-word essay titled 'We Must Pace the Frontier'. Amodei argues that the industry needs to deliberately slow down its pace of improving model capabilities to prevent rogue AI agents from taking over the internet in six to twelve months without added safeguards.
Two of Anthropic's rivals, OpenAI and xAIs leadership, have backed the essay, turning a single company's concern into an industry-wide admission of risk. OpenAI pledged to adopt independent evaluators with employee-like access to verify safety practices, while xAIs leadership responded by saying 'Dario is right'.
The warning has been met with skepticism from some in the crypto community. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin rejected a claim that AI could crash Bitcoin's price by as much as 50%, pushing back against the panic spreading alongside the industry's warning. Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko questioned the motives behind the slowdown proposal, suggesting it benefits labs already dominating the market.
