European lawmakers have written to FIFA President Gianni Infantino demanding he appear before Parliament to answer allegations of US political influence in FIFA's decision-making. The letter, obtained by Euronews, accuses Infantino of treating FIFA as a 'political career ladder.' This comes amid an ongoing investigation into whether US pressure influenced key decisions during the World Cup.

The inquiry was initiated on July 7, 2026, focusing on potential US influence over FIFA's decision-making. One flashpoint involved a red card against US player Folarin Balogun, sparking concerns that the call may have been influenced by politics rather than sporting judgment.

UEFA has escalated tensions by boycotting all FIFA events unless Infantino shelves his private equity ambitions. Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation have also joined the opposition to Infantino's commercial vision.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino previously floated the concept of a 'FIFA Coin' or 'FIFA token,' pitched as a way to unite football fans under a single digital currency framework. However, no such token has been launched, and the project remains in the proposal stage.
