Inflation and Rate Hike Loom Large as Investors Prepare for a Crucial Week
As energy prices and fuel costs continue to surge, inflation is starting to make its presence felt. If August's inflation numbers come in below expectations, Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh may increase interest rates, potentially affecting all high-risk assets.
The week's most critical event will be the release of the September 11 consumer price index (CPI), which is expected to show a 2.9% annual inflation rate. However, last Thursday's producer price index (PPI) already suggested that inflation may not be under control. The high unemployment figures from August, with 162,000 new jobs created instead of the forecasted 55,000, further reduce the likelihood of rapid monetary easing.
Warsh has made it clear in Jackson Hole that fighting inflation remains the top priority for the Fed. Ten days later, at the September FOMC meeting, we will be wiser. The CME Group predicts a 60% chance of a rate hike to between 3.50-3.75%, based on current expectations.
