Inflation Fears Sink $390M from Bitcoin ETFs as Oil Prices Surge

Bitcoin's price recently absorbed a $390 million shock after institutions pulled that sum out of spot Bitcoin ETFs due to rising oil prices and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. According to JPMorgan, the conflict has caused nitrogen fertilizer benchmarks to jump 25-50%, driving global food inflation towards 4-5%. This has led to higher interest rates, which drain cheap liquidity for risk assets.

The whales, or large Bitcoin holders, were among the first to act on this logic. Their wallets holding over 1,000 BTC peaked near 1,963 on July 31 but thinned steadily through August as oil prices climbed. This trend suggests that even the most informed investors are cutting exposure in anticipation of higher inflation.

The $390 million outflow from Bitcoin ETFs is a sharp reversal from the previous week's inflows of $853 million. The current price of around $63,500 indicates steady de-risking rather than panic selling. However, if the institutions continue to bleed funds through August, historically one of Bitcoin's weakest months, and whales keep selling instead of buying, the capitulation could deepen into a 'real' bottom.
