Influencer Fakes $6 Million BTC Short Liquidation for Clout

Crypto influencer Laanie fabricated a $6 million short liquidation on Bitcoin (BTC) to attract followers and clout. The trader posted fake evidence of a leveraged wipeout, which garnered hundreds of thousands of views before being deleted.

The engagement-farming stunt took place during one of the largest single-day gains in BTC's year, with prices rallying from $64,000 to $75,000 in under 24 hours. The proposed Community Note on X challenged Laanie's claim, pointing out that Bybit's Demo mode was enabled on the trading display.

A Bybit demo account allows users to trade with virtual assets and can produce similar liquidation math as a real account. However, trades never fill, and underlying capital doesn't exist.
