Injective Blockchain Freezes for Four Hours to Contain $4.9 Million Hack
A layer-1 blockchain network called Injective was hit by an exploit on Aug. 31, which allowed hackers to drain around $4.9 million from the platform.
The attack occurred when a series of messages were sent to the platform's native exchange and insurance modules, allowing the attackers to bridge funds to Ethereum.
In response to the hack, Injective's team suspended block production for approximately four hours to contain the exploit and prevent further losses. During this time, some validators were temporarily 'jailed' for missing an upgrade window, while exchanges like Coinbase and Coins.ph restricted transfers.
According to on-chain researcher Earthling Paddy, the attack was not isolated to ecosystem applications as Injective initially claimed. Instead, it affected core modules of the platform, requiring a patch to fix the vulnerability.
