INR Stablecoin Launch Sparks Dollarization Fears in India

Share

India's central bank is exploring the launch of an INR stablecoin, which could make it easier for users to hold and send money digitally.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that this move could accelerate dollarization, a process where people choose to hold more dollars instead of local currency due to high inflation or currency volatility.

According to the IMF, stablecoins can make it easier for crypto users in emerging markets to access foreign currencies, especially US dollar-linked tokens. However, this also poses a risk that users may rely on foreign currencies over their local one.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has expressed caution about stablecoins and has prioritized the development of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), which it believes is a safer digital payment option.
