Institutional Demand Can't Overcome Macro Pressures for Bitcoin

Bitcoin's price action has been out of sync with institutional demand, as over $924 million poured into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs from August 24 through August 28, but the cryptocurrency struggled to break above $80,000.

The influx of capital was led by BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust IBIT, which attracted $938 million in net inflows during this period, with Spot Ether ETFs adding another $824 million. However, on August 28, Bitcoin funds suffered a combined outflow of $201.81 million, ending nine consecutive sessions of positive flows.

Despite this reversal, August became the strongest month of 2026 for spot crypto ETFs, attracting more than $3 billion in net new capital. The divergence between institutional demand and price action suggests that large investors are still accumulating Bitcoin, but a more hawkish Federal Reserve and technical resistance are preventing these flows from translating into another breakout.

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole remarks reinforced concerns about persistent inflation, pushing traders to price in a greater chance of another rate increase. As a result, Bitcoin fell from around $79,500 to below $77,000.
