Institutional Grip on Crypto Markets May Crush Broad Altcoin Rallies
The crypto market is undergoing a significant transformation driven by institutional participation, according to Wintermute's latest data. Institutional investors now account for a record 72% of spot OTC trading volume, up from approximately 61% in the second half of 2024.
This shift marks a departure from earlier cycles where retail-driven enthusiasm could lift entire sectors of the crypto market, including smaller-cap altcoins with limited use cases. Institutional participants are now focusing on assets with clear fundamentals, liquidity, and regulatory clarity rather than participating in broad market speculation.
The trend toward tokenized real-world assets also suggests that institutionalization is proceeding along a different path than earlier retail-driven cycles. Tokenized assets reached $31 billion in the first half of this year, representing an increase of approximately 50% compared to the prior period.
