Institutional Grip Tightens on Altcoin Market
Institutional investors dominated the altcoin market in the first half of 2026, according to Wintermute's OTC report. They generated a record-high 72% of all spot flow on the firm's over-the-counter desk.
This figure is up from 61% in the second half of 2025 and 59% in the first half of that year. Liquidity has concentrated in tokens favored by institutions, while activity across smaller assets weakened.
The pattern may make future altcoin rallies narrower, with gains clustering around fewer assets rather than spreading broadly. This is because institutional money moves on quickly, typically within a day, whereas retail activity remains elevated for about three days after a price spike.
