Institutional Money Drives Bitcoin Rally, but Retail Investors Stay Silent
Bitcoin's August rally came without fanfare from retail investors, but institutional money played a crucial role in driving prices up. The cryptocurrency closed the month at $78,571, its strongest August since 2017.
The spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net inflows of $2.77 billion between August 14 and September 1, with BlackRock's IBIT contributing $2.22 billion to this total. Fidelity's FBTC swung from inflows to outflows during this period, while Grayscale's GBTC managed one positive day before reverting to small redemptions.
PlanB, a pseudonymous analyst, views the August close as a structural shift rather than a bounce. He argues that the supply of forced sellers has thinned considerably, with roughly half the circulating supply now sitting in profit.
The crowd's sentiment during the rally was consistently weaker than in July, when prices were flat near $63,000. According to Santiment's data, enthusiasm reached only half the peak recorded in that dead month.
