Institutional Shift Crushes Memecoin Craze
The cryptocurrency market has undergone significant changes in recent years, particularly with growing institutional participation. One of the key areas affected by this shift is the memecoin craze.
The combined market capitalization of DOGE and SHIB, the two largest memecoins by value, has fallen to $13.27 billion, its lowest point in three years. This represents a decline of around 2% just this month alone, even as Bitcoin's price has risen by 10%.
This trend is even more pronounced when looking at the ratio of DOGE and SHIB's market capitalization to Bitcoin's. At one point, these memecoins accounted for 7% of Bitcoin's market cap; today, that figure stands at just over 1%. This represents a significant shift in investor sentiment, with more capital flowing into established assets like Bitcoin.
The introduction of U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs in 2024 has accelerated this trend, drawing in institutional investors who are increasingly focused on traditional macro assets. Higher interest rates worldwide have also contributed to the decline of memecoins, as investors seek safer, more stable investments.
