Privacy-focused blockchains are evolving to meet the needs of institutional users, balancing privacy with regulatory oversight. According to Chainalysis, four distinct models of privacy have emerged on these networks: sub-transaction privacy, shielded pools, encrypted extensions, and private smart contracts.
Canton Network is one standout example, managing $6 trillion in institutional assets as of late 2025. It employs 'sub-transaction privacy,' where only relevant parties see specific transaction details. This segmented data-sharing approach makes it possible for compliance teams to access necessary information while safeguarding broader privacy.
Another notable model is Zcash's shielded pools, which provide opt-in privacy by encrypting sender, receiver, and amount. However, this focus on simple value transactions limits its utility for institutions seeking to build DeFi or other advanced financial products.
The regulatory environment remains challenging, especially amid concerns about money laundering. Major exchanges have delisted privacy coins like Monero and Zcash in the past due to compliance risks.
