Institutions Drive Crypto Market Boom as Retail Investors Step Back
Financial institutions have increased their participation in crypto markets this year, according to Exodus CEO JP Richardson. He noted that retail investors have stepped back from the market, which he sees as a significant shift.
The stablecoin market capitalization has reached an all-time high, and several major financial institutions have made moves into the space. Morgan Stanley launched a BTC ETF, Schwab opened a waitlist for spot Bitcoin trading, Franklin Templeton announced a dedicated crypto division, and Fannie Mae began accepting Bitcoin-backed mortgages.
CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost reported that retail activity hit a nine-year low in early 2024, with inflows from small accounts holding less than 1 BTC reaching a record low. Some investors may have shifted into equities and commodities, which have delivered strong returns.
While the near-term sentiment remains fragile and heavily influenced by macroeconomic factors like oil prices and inflation expectations, analysts are more confident about the medium term. They expect oil prices to decline as supply and demand fundamentals improve.
