Internet Computer Surpasses Rivals in Blockchain Transactions
The Internet Computer (ICP) network has taken the top spot in blockchain transactions on Token Terminal, outperforming several long-term tables. According to Token Terminal's analytics dashboard, ICP has recorded 449.5 billion transactions over three years, accounting for nearly half of the 919.9 billion tallied across all tracked layer-1 networks.
This surprising growth coincides with the expansion of the underlying infrastructure, which operates through multiple independent subnets that allow capacity to increase by adding subnets rather than enlarging a single chain. The network's mainnet launch in May 2021 marked the beginning of its rapid growth.
Token Terminal calculates ICP's figures by converting pre-aggregated average transactions-per-second statistics into daily totals, which produce large cumulative sums. In contrast to conventional networks, where transactions are discrete user-initiated actions recorded in a block after consensus, Token Terminal's definition of transaction count includes canister messages processed by the network.
The resulting volume therefore includes a broader class of computational events than the value-transfer or smart-contract invocations typically tallied on Ethereum or Solana. This methodological difference explains why cumulative figures for ICP exceed those of networks that process higher volumes of conventional financial transactions.
