Interoperable Settlement Rails Crucial for Institutional Finance

Share

Lynq CEO Jerald David emphasizes that institutional finance needs to upgrade its settlement infrastructure to facilitate seamless movement of cash and collateral around the clock. As digital asset markets continue to trade without closing, David notes that there is a growing mismatch between trading hours and settlement hours.

Digital money will likely coexist in various forms, including stablecoins, tokenized deposits, CBDCs, and traditional bank money. Each of these instruments serves a specific purpose, but institutions still require a way to transfer value between them when obligations arise.

The Bank of England's Digital Pound Lab experiment highlights the need for interoperable settlement rails. The lab is testing whether a stablecoin and simulated digital pounds can handle separate parts of the same cross-border trade-finance payment. David stresses that institutions may have sufficient capital, but it must be available in the required form and jurisdiction when needed.

David's comments come as U.S. banks are developing products to extend settlement beyond normal hours. Wells Fargo plans to begin with selected corporate clients using a U.S. dollar-to-British pound corridor, allowing participating clients to transfer, program, and settle funds around the clock on the bank's blockchain platform.
