Intesa Sanpaolo Slashes Bitcoin Exposure Amid Banco BPM Exit
Intesa Sanpaolo S.p.A., a leading Italian bank, has significantly reduced its exposure to Bitcoin. According to reports, the bank's holdings in iShares Bitcoin Trust were cut by approximately 94%, from 646,809 shares to just 40,723. This move comes as the bank's stock price rose around 1.7% following Banco BPM's decision to exit merger talks with Monte dei Paschi.
The reduction in Bitcoin-linked exposure is a notable development, given Intesa Sanpaolo's previous investment in the cryptocurrency space. The bank had initially invested in iShares Bitcoin Trust but has now largely exited its holdings, opting for a put tied to 500,000 IBIT shares instead. This shift in strategy suggests that Intesa Sanpaolo may be re-evaluating its stance on cryptocurrencies.
The news of Banco BPM's exit from merger talks with Monte dei Paschi likely contributed to the increase in Intesa Sanpaolo's stock price. The bank's takeover bid for MPS remains a leading option, as the latter continues to explore alternative solutions. This development has been welcomed by investors, who see it as a positive sign for the Italian banking sector.
