IonQ Unveils 256-Qubit Quantum Computer, But Bitcoin Threat Looms in the Distance
IonQ, a US-based quantum computing company, has unveiled its latest innovation - the Superion 256, a 256-qubit quantum computer that can start taking orders now. While this milestone marks significant progress in the field of quantum computing, analysts say it's still far from posing a threat to Bitcoin's security.
The concern over the potential impact of quantum computing on Bitcoin's cryptographic system has been growing. In theory, a powerful enough quantum computer could derive a private key from an exposed public key and use it to steal another person's Bitcoin. However, experts point out that the current 256-qubit level is not sufficient to undermine Bitcoin security.
The Superion 256 operates on a different concept than Bitcoin's 256-bit security, making it unlikely to break through the cryptographic system anytime soon. A more advanced technology, capable of performing complex calculations reliably over extended periods, would be required for an attack on Bitcoin.
IonQ plans to continue pushing the boundaries of quantum computing performance with its next-generation Superion 10K. The company aims to demonstrate fault-tolerant quantum computing technology by 2027, which would be a significant step forward in the field.
