IOTA's Starfish Upgrade Boosts Trade Infrastructure Resilience
IOTA's Starfish consensus engine has gone live on the IOTA mainnet, marking one of the project's most significant upgrades to date. The new engine replaces the Mysticeti engine with a fundamentally different approach to how the network reaches agreement on transactions.
The upgrade, which was activated via protocol version 24 in release v1.21.1 around April 23, 2026, is designed to make IOTA a reliable infrastructure for global trade systems, even when network conditions are poor. Starfish decouples the network's progress from the synchronization of every single node, allowing the chain to keep moving even if some validators are temporarily lagging.
The technical architecture relies on a directed acyclic graph-based Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus model, which includes three key mechanisms: cordial dissemination for data spread across the network, Reed-Solomon encoding for ensuring data availability, and Data Availability Certificates (DACs) providing cryptographic proof that transaction data is accessible when needed.
The early numbers are encouraging, with outbound recovery requests on the mainnet decreasing by approximately 10 times compared to the Mysticeti engine. Tail latency for transaction commits has also dropped meaningfully, and variance under fluctuating network conditions is significantly lower.
