Iran and Oman Establish Temporary Shipping Corridor Through Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz has become a major obstacle in international shipping due to ongoing conflict and mining. A joint navigation corridor through the waterway was established on August 25 by Iran and Oman, allowing commercial vessels to pass through exclusively.
The crisis began in late February 2026 when a period of conflict and mining transformed one of the planet's busiest shipping lanes into a hazardous area. A ceasefire took effect on April 8, 2026, but physical hazards remained.
A memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran signed on June 17 committed Iran to 60 days of safe, toll-free commercial passage through the strait. The agreement built on this framework, giving commercial passage a bilateral institutional shape rather than leaving it as a U.S.-Iran bilateral arrangement alone.
