Iran Tries to Collect Strait of Hormuz Toll in Cryptocurrency
The US and Iran are engaged in negotiations over an interim ceasefire for the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most crucial shipping lanes. The proposed agreement would give Iran more control over vessel transit through the strait, which handles around 20% of global oil shipments.
Iran has suggested collecting a toll of $1 per barrel from oil-laden tankers passing through the strait. While this may seem like a modest fee, with millions of barrels transiting daily, it would generate significant revenue for Iran.
The twist in these negotiations is that Iran wants to collect these tolls in Bitcoin or stablecoins, which would help Tehran sidestep international sanctions and access traditional financial systems.
