Iran Turns to Bitcoin to Bypass Sanctions and Stabilize Economy
Iran's central bank has been quietly encouraging traders to use cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, to settle cross-border transactions and help stabilize its struggling economy.
The country has been under strict sanctions for decades, with a sharp escalation beginning in late 2025, compounded by war with the U.S. and Israel starting in February 2026, and a naval blockade that has cut oil exports by more than 80%.
In response, Iran's central bank advised its countrymen to take any necessary steps to help the economy, which has one of the highest rates of inflation in the world.
The use of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin has proven effective in getting money flowing into the country, with the central bank not asking questions about how funds are transferred.
