Iran Turns to Cryptocurrencies Amid Rial Crisis and US Sanctions

Iran's economic woes have led to an increased adoption of cryptocurrencies as the country's rial weakens under US sanctions. The Iranian government has relaxed its enforcement around foreign-exchange repatriation, allowing exporters to use local crypto exchanges to repatriate funds and reduce their reliance on the official foreign-exchange system.

According to a report by the Financial Times, companies in Iran can now receive crypto payments in USDT and BTC for cross-border transactions. This shift has normalized the practice of receiving export payments in crypto, with an executive associated with the government stating that 'receiving export payments in crypto has now become completely normalized.'

However, the use of USDT comes with risks as Tether can freeze these tokens at the issuer level, making it a less decentralized option compared to Bitcoin. The Iranian rial has fallen 21% since July 14, exacerbating the country's economic crisis and potentially leading to greater adoption of cryptocurrencies.

The Central Bank of Iran has not issued any formal policy on crypto regulations, leaving the legal uncertainty around this matter unresolved. Additionally, over 20,000 individuals and companies have allegedly failed to return around €94 billion in export proceeds held overseas, highlighting the need for repatriation efforts by Iranian officials.
