The charges were brought against six individuals, who are accused of being part of the Iranian government's cyber warfare unit. It is alleged that they carried out the extortion campaign between 2019 and 2021, using Bitcoin as a means to launder the stolen funds.

The hacktivist group was reportedly able to extort millions from victims by threatening to release sensitive information unless payment was made in Bitcoin.
