Iran's Crypto-Friendly New Leader: Mojtaba Khamenei's IRGC Ties and $7.8B Blockchain War Chest
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, has been appointed as Iran's new supreme leader by the Assembly of Experts. This marks the first father-to-son succession in the country's history.
Khamenei spent decades as an informal power broker in his father's office and has deep ties to the Revolutionary Guard (IRGC). The IRGC immediately pledged full obedience to him, signaling a hardline continuity in Iran's leadership.
The appointment comes after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on February 28. Analysts believe this move will lead to increased tensions and conflict with Israel and the West.
The IRGC has significant ties to Iran's cryptocurrency ecosystem, which reached $7.78 billion in value last year. State-sponsored Bitcoin mining accounts for 2%, 5% of global hash rate, and the IRGC-linked entities received more than 50% of the value received by Iranian crypto platforms in Q4 2025.
The appointment increases the likelihood that Iran's state crypto apparatus will remain intact under Mojtaba Khamenei's leadership. This raises concerns about tighter Western sanctions targeting civilian infrastructure and the potential for increased conflict with Israel and the West.
