Iran's New Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei Inherits Crypto Empire and Military Might
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, has been appointed as Iran's new supreme leader by the Assembly of Experts. This marks a historic first for the Islamic Republic, with Mojtaba being the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who was killed in US-Israeli airstrikes on February 28.
The IRGC pledged full obedience to Mojtaba immediately after his appointment, which analysts see as a hardline continuity signal rather than an opening for negotiation. Iranian armed forces claim they can sustain at least six months of high-intensity conflict at the current operational pace.
The cryptocurrency ecosystem in Iran reached $7.78 billion in 2025 and serves both as a civilian financial lifeline and a state sanctions-evasion tool. Following the strikes, there was a 700% spike in outflows from Nobitex, Iran's largest exchange with 11 million users, within minutes of the attacks.
The Chainalysis 2026 Crime Report found that IRGC-linked entities accounted for more than 50% of value received by Iranian crypto platforms in Q4 2025. State-sponsored Bitcoin mining, which uses subsidized electricity to mine at an estimated $1,300 per coin, accounts for 2%-5% of global hash rate and is now under threat from military strikes on power substations.
