Ireland Cracks Down on Crypto Market to Combat Money Laundering

Share

Ireland has tightened its oversight of the crypto market for the first time in an effort to combat money laundering risks. The country's new National Strategy on Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing, and Proliferation Financing sets out stricter rules for crypto assets and transactions.

The strategy aims to make it harder to use digital assets to move illicit funds anonymously. It includes measures such as increasing transparency around information on companies' beneficial owners, modernizing financial intelligence systems, and strengthening oversight of financial institutions with a high risk of money laundering.

Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris stated that the new strategy sends a clear message: Ireland will not be a safe place to launder criminal proceeds. He emphasized that criminal organizations are increasingly using new technologies and crypto assets for illicit activities.
