Ireland Cracks Down on Money Laundering with New AML Strategy
The Irish government has announced plans to tighten anti-money laundering (AML) controls in the country, specifically targeting the gambling and cryptocurrency industries.
According to a national risk assessment on money laundering, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing conducted in 2026, there is a moderate threat of money laundering in Ireland. Criminal groups are increasingly using established cash-based methods alongside crypto assets and money-mule networks.
The government's new strategy will bring stronger anti-money laundering oversight to gambling operators, including casinos offering machine-based gambling. The plan also calls for tighter enforcement of licence conditions and a more robust regulatory framework.
Cryptocurrency transactions will receive particular attention under the new strategy. Gambling firms are expected to carry out due diligence on crypto-related transactions to establish where funds originate. The wider strategy will strengthen anti-money laundering requirements for crypto assets and transfers.
