Ireland Unveils Comprehensive Anti-Money Laundering Strategy Focusing on Digital Assets
Ireland has introduced its first national anti-money laundering (AML) framework, placing digital assets at the center of its enforcement strategy. The initiative was unveiled by Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris on August 13.
The new framework centers on five key priorities: coordinated national action, comprehensive risk assessment, enhanced regulatory infrastructure, capacity development, and global collaboration. Harris emphasized the urgency of the measures, stating that 'Criminal networks are growing more advanced... They leverage emerging technologies, digital currencies, and intricate cross-border financial systems to hide illicit gains.'
The framework introduces enhanced regulations for cryptocurrency service providers, requiring them to conduct rigorous checks on private wallet transactions. It also includes stricter due diligence requirements for firms dealing with overseas crypto companies.
Ireland aims to align itself with EU MiCA requirements and prepare for the 2026 FATF assessment. The rollout has commenced across government agencies, law enforcement bodies, and regulatory institutions.
