Ireland Unveils Tough Crypto Regulations in National AML Strategy
Ireland has launched its first-ever national anti-money laundering strategy, which targets digital assets and offshore corporate structures. The framework was unveiled by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Simon Harris on August 13, 2026.
Criminal networks are increasingly using emerging technologies and cross-border financial channels to hide illicit gains, according to Harris. To combat this, the new strategy has five core priorities: coordinated national action, comprehensive risk assessment, enhanced regulatory infrastructure, capacity development, and global collaboration.
The plan places a particular emphasis on crypto-asset service providers, requiring firms operating in Ireland to conduct enhanced verification on transactions involving private crypto wallets. This is aimed at curbing anonymous fund movements that bypass regulated intermediaries. The rules also impose stricter customer due diligence when Irish companies deal with overseas digital asset businesses.
