IREN Ditches Bitcoin Mining for AI Cloud Computing Opportunity
Bitcoin miner IREN is making significant strides in catching up with its peers in service delivery. The company's low energy costs and outstanding efficiency enable it to produce bitcoins at a lower cost than other miners.
However, IREN has recently recognized the potential of generative AI and is quickly pivoting from bitcoin mining to AI cloud computing. This shift is driven by the company's experience in low-cost, high-efficiency compute and its recognition that artificial intelligence presents a better opportunity for leveraging its cheap power supply.
The company has begun retrofitting its existing bitcoin mines in British Columbia and West Texas into AI data centers, with plans to expand further. As of fiscal 2026, IREN has secured additional sites in Texas and Oklahoma for future AI cloud expansion.
