IREN Shifts Focus from Bitcoin Mining to AI Cloud Computing

IREN Limited is refocusing its business from Bitcoin mining to AI cloud computing. The company aims to bring most of its new capacity online by 2028 and targets $4 billion in contracted annual recurring revenue (ARR) by year-end. IREN's data center pipeline has the potential to generate $40-100 billion in ARR, with recent contracts showing increasing revenue per megawatt.

Despite the heavy upfront costs and near-term revenue delays associated with transitioning to AI cloud computing, IREN trades at low forward multiples and is expected to be revalued as its AI cloud revenues grow. The company has secured strong customer prepayments supporting GPU capital expenditures, which are currently in discussions around $25 million per MW.

IREN recently reported a $638.8 million impairment on older Bitcoin mining equipment, causing its stock to drop 13% and triggering a selloff among AI data center peers like Applied Digital and TeraWulf. This writedown was a major contributor to IREN's net loss of $684 million in Q4, despite strong revenue growth from its AI Cloud business.
