Iren's AI Pivot Hits Milestone Amid Funding Concerns
Iren, an AI-cloud business, has reached a major milestone in its pivot from Bitcoin mining to AI infrastructure. The company's AI-cloud revenue surpassed that of its legacy Bitcoin mining operations for the first time, with $70.5 million generated in the fiscal fourth quarter.
This marks a significant turning point for Iren, which spent years classified as a crypto miner but is now focusing on AI cloud services. Full-year AI-cloud revenue surged nearly eightfold to $129 million, demonstrating the new business line's growth and potential.
However, despite this operational progress, investors are concerned about the company's projected capital requirements for fiscal 2027, estimated at between $25 billion and $30 billion. This has led to a 12% share-price slide on Friday, with analysts warning of significant shareholder dilution if Iren turns to equity markets to bridge the funding gap.
Iren has secured $14 billion in financing already and expects another $8 billion from future rounds, but this still leaves a substantial gap. The company points to improving scale economics in its compute business as it expands its capacity, with pricing for new capacity increasing sharply since November.
