Irish Crime Gangs Stashing Crypto Credentials in Rented Vaults

Irish crime gangs have been storing cryptocurrency private keys and seed phrases in rented vaults alongside cash, watches, and other valuables. According to Detective Chief Superintendent Michael Gubbins, who heads the country's Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB), investigators have encountered this practice during their own cases.

Gubbins stated that rented vaults can contain access credentials for cryptocurrency wallets, which allow users to authorize transactions from crypto wallets. He noted that these credentials are often stored alongside cash and luxury goods, providing a physical component to digital asset investigations.

The use of rented vaults for storing cryptocurrency credentials has given investigators another tool in their efforts to combat money laundering and terrorist financing. Gubbins pointed out that the anonymity provided by cryptocurrencies can be an attractive feature for criminal groups, but it also comes with drawbacks such as price volatility and the risk of losing passwords or other credentials.

The CAB chief emphasized that cryptocurrency use among Irish criminal groups is still relatively basic, with cash dominating drug trafficking proceeds. He noted that authorities have encountered professional money launderers who move funds on behalf of criminal groups using informal value transfer systems like hawala.
