Irish Crime Groups Turn to Private Vaults for Crypto Anonymity
Ireland's organized crime groups are adopting a new strategy to hide and protect their illicit wealth. Rather than storing their assets in easily searchable locations, they are renting private storage vaults.
The vaults will hold six-figure luxury watches, designer handbags, and cryptocurrency access keys or credentials that can provide control over digital assets. According to Michael Gubbins, Chief Bureau Officer of the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB), 'They [attackers] believe there's an anonymity attached to it, but also the one vulnerability is that a lot of the cryptocurrency is quite volatile in value.'
Gangs are using this new approach to evade law enforcement and make their wealth harder to trace. By keeping their assets in separate locations, they can layer their money-laundering methods to fit the modern financial environment.
