IRS Issues Warning as Scammers Use Crypto Regulation Fears to Phish Users
The US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a warning to the crypto community about a new phishing tactic using fake tax agency letters. Scammers are mailing counterfeit 'Digital Asset Compliance' letters to crypto users, requesting they register on a lookalike IRS domain by scanning a QR code.
These scam letters claim there is an urgent deadline for registration and threaten penalties if not met. Once on the site, fraudsters collect personal information from unsuspecting users, including identification details and cryptocurrency wallet or exchange account information.
The IRS-CI Chief Jarod Koopman stated, 'Criminals continue to exploit public trust in government agencies by creating convincing fake websites and official-looking correspondence.'
Separately, Senator Cynthia Lummis' X account was hacked, promoting a newly created Solana meme coin called 'USA'. However, the crypto community quickly flagged it as suspicious, preventing any potential losses.
